Facility Entry Policy

  • Outside food and drinks are not permitted inside the facility. Cups may be brought in only if they are empty when entering.
  • Water is available on site.
  • Bags are subject to check at entry, and the side entrance may be temporarily locked during peak bag-check times.
  • Repeated policy violations may result in seasonal team bans.

Coed 4s

  • Teams must have at least two players on the court to play.
  • Lineups require at least one girl and no more than two guys on the court at one time.
  • A team may not have more than six players participate in a given day.
  • Teams short of a full lineup may play with consent from the opposing team.

Women's and Men's 4s

  • Teams must have at least two players on the court and no more than four players on the court.
  • A team may not have more than six players participate in a given day.
  • Teams short of a full lineup may play with consent from the opposing team.

Coed 6s

  • Teams must have at least four players on the court to play.
  • Lineups require at least two girls and no more than four guys on the court.
  • A team may not have more than eight players participate in a given day.
  • Teams short of a full lineup may play with consent from the opposing team.
  • A 6s lineup may not play with four men and one woman.

Advanced League Subs

  • Advanced league teams must check in subs at the desk before that day's game.
  • Subs must fill out a sub card with team name and player name, and must present ID.
  • Returning subs must bring ID and get their card hole punched. On The Dunes keeps sub cards on file.
  • Subs must participate in at least four regular season games to participate in the end-of-season playoffs.
  • Using a playoff sub who has not met the four-game requirement voids the team from winning cash prizes.

Starting Games and Scoring

  • A team earns first serve for game one by winning rock, paper, scissors.
  • The winning team serves first in games one and three; the opposing team serves first in game two.
  • Teams play three games to 21 straight-up.
  • Serves that hit the net and go over are live and playable.

Service and Rotation

  • 4s teams do not need to rotate court position, but must rotate service.
  • 6s teams must rotate on the court and remain in position until the serve has been contacted.
  • The back-right player in the 6s rotation serves and the rotation continues clockwise.
  • The server may not step on or over the end line until the ball has been contacted.
  • The service area runs sideline to sideline and has infinite depth.
  • The serve may not be blocked or spiked.
  • Players may return a serve by bump pass, clasped hands, closed fist or set pass.

Playing the Ball

  • Each team is allowed a maximum of three successive contacts to return the ball.
  • A block touch on an attacking ball does not count as one of the three contacts.
  • There are no male/female hitting rules.
  • In 4s, every player is eligible to attack or block at the net.
  • In 6s, only the three front-row players may attack or block at the net.
  • Open-hand tips are not allowed unless the arm is swinging. Roll shots and closed-fist tips are allowed.

Contacts and Hand Sets

  • When two non-blocking teammates touch the ball simultaneously, it counts as one contact and any player may make the next contact.
  • When two blocking teammates touch the ball simultaneously, it does not count as a contact.
  • A ball simultaneously contacted by opponents over the net remains live; the receiving team is entitled to another three hits.
  • The ball may contact any body part down to and including the foot if contact is simultaneous and the ball rebounds immediately and cleanly.
  • The ball must be contacted cleanly and not held, lifted, caught, carried or thrown.
  • Hand sets must contact both hands simultaneously and leave both hands simultaneously.
  • A double contact is allowed on first contact only. Other double hits are illegal.
  • Ball rotation after a set may indicate a held ball or multiple contacts, but rotation by itself is not a fault.

Attacking, Blocking and Net Play

  • A player may not attack the ball on the opponent's side of the net.
  • A legal follow-through may cross the net if it does not contact an opponent or the net.
  • Multiple contacts during one block attempt are legal and count as a single contact.
  • Any player in a block may make the next contact, which counts as the first of three team hits.
  • Blocking or attacking a serve is prohibited.
  • No part of the body may touch the net unless a ball or person driven into the net causes the contact.
  • Hair or uniform contact with the net is not considered a fault.
  • Simultaneous net contact by opponents is a double fault and the point is replayed.
  • Any body part may cross the center line as long as it does not interfere with the opposing player.
